Insights into Gambling Psychology

Gambling psychology, generally speaking, relates to how people view gamblers and also speaks of the activity, and to why there are those who engage in them.

Even in countries where gambling is legal, they are viewed (especially by those that do not go to casinos) with puzzlement, contempt or a little of both. The reason is that gambling is seen as an aberration, an activity that other "normal" folks would not, or should not, get into.

But is it?

If gambling is defined as risking some money in order to win more, and paying the price if wrong, then a whole range of activities can be included. Those people who are trying to make money in the forex or the stock market can be considered gamblers. That is a description that most will be willing to accept.

But it actually goes further than that, because the businessman who buys a piece of land hoping it will increase in value in the future can also be considered a gambler. Indeed, all who put up money to start a business can be likened to a bet.

Some will argue that gambling in casinos is different because the players are risking their money with incomplete information. But that argument can't hold because no matter what your enterprise may be, buy/sell, repair shop, real estate, etc. you will never be able to conduct the type of research necessary to ensure 100% success.

We can take this even further; every time you step out of the house and go to work you are gambling, because you will never know when lightning might strike or an earthquake occur.

As for the gambling psychology of those who play the game, it isn't just about the money; it is also about the thrills, and the challenge. High rollers do not play the game for the money, but rather for the love of the game, or for the love of competing. Even the casual visitors to Las Vegas play the slots more as a way to pass the time and have some fun more than anything else.

In the end, gambling is meant to be an enjoyable activity, nothing more and nothing less. There is nothing abnormal about wanting to have fun, and if you keep this mind, then there is nothing to worry about. Eventually, as more and more people begin to understand its deeper aspects, the negative impressions will dissipate.
